Research - Ian Shipley

Ian Shipley is a local commercial photographer based in Burton on Trent, who specialises in industrial and commercial photography all over the UK.  He uses very high key techniques for his photgraphy like the type of techniques Steve suggests I use in my photography for New You Salon.

I have not uploaded any of his images to my blog as he states on his website not to use any of his images unless contacting him first.  I will email him and ask for his permission but meanwhile here is a link to his website.

Practise Shoot at New You Salon

Last week I went over to New You Salon in Leicester to speak to my client about what she wanted to achieve and to take some practise shots.  I took with me my Nikon D7000 with a selection of lenses and my tripod.  The weather was really nice and sunny which allowed lots of natural light into the salon which has skylights in the ceiling.  I did not use my tripod for many of the shots as the salon is a lot smaller than it looks on their website making use of my tripod quite difficult as there was very limited space.

These are a few images I took as until I speak to Steve about which is the best process to lighten the images in post production I cannot go any further.  I have cropped the images to W 15.88 H 11.91 with a resolution of 96 the same size as the original images on the website which will make uploading to the template of the website easy.

Research New You Salon

I am finding it difficult to research the type of materials to help me with New You Salon.  They do not use any products at the moment although are researching them to add new lines to their product base.  I have researched the machine they use for the hair removal which is called Ellipse and have included some images from the internet to show this.

Steve has said that using low light to shoot the images with a low ISO which will push the narrow depth of field should produce the images I want.  These can then be post produced to be more high key allowing that clinical look which is present on the following images.

The first image appears to have used this technique as this seems to look very clinical in appearance.

Practise Shots - Narrow depth of field

When I spoke to Steve last week he told me to practise some shots at home focusing on detail.  When I shoot for New You Salon I plan to concentrate on the details being in focus with a narrow depth of field within the image.  The images they have at present on their website are all taken with a wide depth of field with no focus on any details which creates shots which do not appear professional.

I plan to shoot the beauty rooms by focusing on a small detail like the plant image below and allowing a slight blur in the background so you can still see the room but creating a more professional looking shot.  Other shots will be based on small details of products, towels and candles with give the message with narrow depth of field shots and the focus being on a small detail.

I have discussed the way I want to approach this shoot with my client.  The images presently on her website are whole room images, there is no focus on detail.  I have explained that the whole salon image will not be shown in the images but tiny details that portray a message of what the customers want.

These images are not beauty related as I was at home and had to use what I had available.

I have shot these with my Nikon D7000 and 50mm 1.8 D lens.

Meeting Arranged with New You Salon

I have contacted New You Salon and set up a meeting at 11.00 on Saturday 15th October to shoot some images around the salon which they can use for their website.  We have discussed on the telephone what kind of images are required.  The required images will be taken around the salon to be used for promotion of their website.  I have sent an email confirming the time of the meeting.

I will take my Nikon D7000 and tripod to eliminate any camera shake and to frame the shots taken.  I will take a selection of lenses but I will use my Nikon 50mm 1.8 D for most of the shots as this lens shows good depth of field for detailed shots and is fantastic at blurring out the background.  I will take my Nikon 18-200 which is a good all round lens and my Nikon Nikkor Macro F2.8 lens for any close up shots.  My 50mm and Macro lens are also good portrait lenses so I will be taking any portrait shots with these lenses.

After studying the images used on their website at present I can see that no flash has been used and Deb at New You Salon has informed me that there are skylights in the ceiling which allows strong natural light into the salon.  I will use my 50mm lens that has an aperture of 1.8 which is great for indoor photography because of the large aperture.  I am hoping for a bright day to make good use of the natural light but will take my Nikon SB 700 Flash light.

I will concentrate on shooting detailed shots using a shallow depth of field with the salon in the background and detailed shots of products, machines and decoration.  I have researched salon images and have included a few in this post which show what I am hoping to achieve.  For the room shots I will use good composition and capture a small area of the room.

Whilst on this shoot I must at all times be aware of any safety aspects which may be present.  When I arrive I will carry out a quick risk assessment for my own safety, safety of the equipment and the safety of the people around me.

New You Laser Clinic - Salon Photography

I will arrange a meeting with the owner of the clinic and find out what techniques I can add to the desired images in order to create professional looking images for their website.   The website address is www.hairremovalleicester.co.uk

As the company is in Leicester I will need to draw up a plan devised from research to enable me to eliminate unnecessary re-shoots.  As all this photography will be indoor photography I will need to make use of any light from windows or overhead light which is available to me.

Elite Handling Limited - Warehouse Photography

I have contacted my client Lee at Elite Handling Limited and arranged a meeting to find out what the client wants to achieve in the images taken.  The web address for Elite Handling is www.elitehandling.co.uk which already has images.  I will be looking at what techniques can be used to improve these images and create further images.

I will need to research and obtain as much information as possible before I go to and do the initial shoot as Elite Handling is in Nottingham so I do not want to waste valuable time in travel by not being properly prepared and with all the correct equipment.  I will do the shoot on a fine day so any arrangements made will be subject to the weather as part of the shoot will be done outside and dependent on good outside light.
